International Relations Expert Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso is asking sub-regional bodies to closely monitor the situation in neighbouring Ivory Coast and intervene when necessary.
It follows the declaration of opposition leader Alasane Ouattara as winner of that country’s elections.
Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo’s was reportedly delaying the release of results in addition to demands that some results from Ouattara’s stronghold be annulled.
The Ivorian constitutional courts have also hinted they might take over the process.
Dr. Antwi Danso said Ivory Coast must be compelled to adhere international electoral protocols.
"It is not a big surprise to me because once Bedie turned around to support Ouattara and I knew it was going to turn that way.
“What my worry is what the constitutional court did just before the announcement and what Gbagbo and the government himself did. Both the AU and ECOWAS have protocols on elections and good governance. Any infractions, any infringement on some of the tenets of the protocols will not go down well with these regional bodies. And I believe if there are any kind of chaos in Ivory Coast both the AU and ECOWAS have a right now to step in,” he said.
