The president of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students is calling on the government to ensure that polytechnic education is not ridiculed anymore. The polytechnic students say they are deeply worried about the increasing cases of misguided statements by certain individuals in public office. They say such comments seek to undermine polytechnic education in the country. The president of GNUPS, Ebenezer Boakye-Agyemang cited Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs and Strategic Direction of the National Health Insurance Authority, Mr. Eric Ametor-Quarmyne and Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Parker Allotey to buttress his arguments. Mr Ametor-Quarmyne had said the National Health Insurance Scheme was fraught with many problems because many of the people at the helm of affairs were HND holders. He subsequently apologized for the comments, explaining his comments were not intended to insult them. He also believed he had been misunderstood, explaining that his own child was studying Accountancy at the Accra Polytechnic. Mr Parker Allotey on his part averred that a number of teachers transferred from the Aburi Girls Senior High School had no reason to complain because one of them was an HND holder who was not qualified to teach at the SHS. But the polytechnic students want such pronouncements stopped forthwith. Source: Joy News/Ghana
