The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has been served a stern warning to resolve its internal squabbles or face students’ revolt. According to executives of Unity Hall at the KNUST, the current power wrangling within the national tertiary student body is derailing the collective objectives of promoting the interest of the Ghanaian student. They are calling on the KNUST’s Students Representative Council to secede from NUGS until the latter resolves its internal power squabbles. The leadership of the NUGS has over the past couple of months been entangled in a power struggle between two factions – each faction has gone the Ivory Coast style of installing its own president. The fragmented front has rendered NUGS ineffective in taking decisions and carrying out its primary function of championing the cause of students. Speaking to Luv News, President of Unity Hall at the KNUST, Thomas Freeman Yeboah, regretted that today’s NUGS executives have resulted to seeking parochial interest, when past executives fought to alter unfair government policies and decisions affecting students. According to Mr Yeboah, the current NUGS administration has failed to comply with all eleven core values of the Union. He blamed the NUGS administration for breaching the group’s constitution by aligning themselves with political parties and not championing the cause of students. Meanwhile, President of KNUST SRC, Yaw Oduro Amoah has described the calls as premature. He tells Luv News, executives from other tertiary institutions will be meeting to decide on their position on NUGS. Story by Kwabena Owusu-Ampratwum/Luv Fm
