Student leaders in the Ashanti region are calling for a greater participation in the formulation of government policies. The students say they feel neglected and sidelined by government in formulating policies, especially on youth-related matters. The President Ashanti Regional Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Samuel Owusu Amoako raised the concern at the launch of the 13th Annual Students’ Week celebrations in Kumasi. Kwabena Ampratwum reports the SRC president was particularly angry that students’ views were not sought in the education reforms a few years ago. Owusu Amoako entreated policy makers and school authorities to discard the notion that Senior High School students were not matured enough to make informed contributions to the national discourse. He blamed students unrest and sometimes violent demonstrations on lack of communication between school authorities and students. The SRC President said it was in the interest of both students and authorities for SHSs to have vibrant SRCs who can articulate the concerns of students. Source: Joy News/Ghana
