The President of the African Institute of Journalism and Communications, Mr. Kojo Yankah is calling for a national debate on the sustainability of the Schools Feeding Programme.
Government began the programme about two years ago on a pilot basis with the intention of getting all children of school going age to enroll.
But Mr. Kojo Yankah said the program was not sustainable because it was dependent on donor funding, which could be difficult in accessing.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News’ Elvis Kwashie, he said there were enough indications that the country could not feed all deprived children and for him, the best way out was to train school children to farm to feed themselves because no amount of feeding could keep children in school.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini has said he has filed a motion in Parliament seeking the setting up of a committee to investigate an alleged misappropriation of funds for the school feeding programme.
Mr. Fuseini had accused officials of the programme of spending about ¢3 billion cedis without prior approval from the local government ministry.
