The Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture, Hon. Alexander Asum-Ahensah has said government is looking at setting aside February 14 every year to honour women in the arts. The Minister indicated that the arts sector which forms an integral part of any nation’s development needs to be recognized, especially women who are in that industry. The Minister made this comment at the maiden edition of the Women in Creative Industry Honours which took place at the National Theatre Monday night February 14. The award ceremony was spear-headed by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and it is the brain-child of Mrs Diana Hopson who doubles as its President. It was organised to commemorate International Day of Anti-Violence Against Women which falls on November 25 every year. MUSIGA last year, after organising a seminar for 50 women in the creative industry to empower them, had wanted to hold this event but was forced to postpone it due to challenges. Several women in the creative industry including Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Bibie Brew, Leila Djansi, Gifty Anti, Grace Nortey, Rev Amy Newman and Theresa Ayoade of Charter House were awarded at the ceremony. The Vice President, John Drahamani Mahama, whose address was read on his behalf by Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Minister of Women and Children's Affairs indicated government’s readiness to collaborate with musicians to improve their lot. There were also exciting performances on the night from Bibie Brew, Dzesi – the all female group lead by Della Hayes, Naa Amanua and the ever green Wulomei.
