There are sharp divisions among teachers in the Kumasi metropolis over whether they should continue their strike or resume work today. Some teachers calling themselves the Platform for Elite Teachers, numbering about three hundred have announced they will return to the classroom today. This was after the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah assured them of adequate security. Spokesperson for the teachers, Musah de-Graft Coleman said once the government had activated a process to resolve the anomalies recorded in their salaries, there was no justification to go on a strike. He rejected suggestions that the decision of his group to ignore the call of NAGRAT for a strike is a stab in the back of the teachers’ association. But another group - Concerned Teachers is opposing the move. The Spokesperson of the group, Kwame Sarpong said the Platform for Elite Teachers is a group of hypocrites. “We have realized that they are just sabotaging our efforts so from [Wednesday] morning we will dispatch ourselves to the various schools and check. If we should see any teacher in any schools, we shall deal with that teacher,” he threatened. Mr Sarpong claimed the education authorities in the region were intimidating teachers over the matter.
