The Deputy Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES) Stephen Adu has disclosed to Adom News that he is not in support of the outright ban on the use of mobile phones in Senior High Schools.
Mr. Adu challenged authorities championing the course to look beyond the ban on mobile phones, since computers and laptops can also be used by students in watching pornography.
The Deputy Director however explained that the fact that he is not in support of the ban does not necessarily mean he is encouraging students to defy the order and send mobile phones to schools.
This comes after two students of Shama Senior High School were caught watching pornography on their phones.
Mr. Adu told Adom News that the students should rather be conscientised on when, where and how to use the device in school and how it will benefit them when wisely used rather than banning it out rightly.
Mr. Adu could not deny that mobile phones are disruptive for students but stressed that, instead of banning its use completely, it could be regulated so that school authorities can punish those who violate the regulation.
“Our television screens and mainstream news papers too are full of pornography so if mobile phones are to be banned, then it must be done in addition with other gadgets that can engender immorality among students” he emphasized.
According to him the ban can breed revolt and rebellion, without addressing the underlying problem of indiscipline and immorality among students, which is the main reason behind the ban.
