The Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori has described the Coalition of Concerned Teachers as a militant group who are exhibiting acts of lawlessness in the country. According to him, the police is not a toothless bull dog and will therefore not condone any form of illegality, lawlessness and anarchy in the country. The Police on Friday March 11 opened teargas to disperse a group of teachers at the premises of the Ghana National Association of Teachers who were demonstrating against distortions in their salaries. The police arrested six in the process. Some teachers in the Brekum Municipality in the Brong Ahafo region are demanding an immediate apology from the Police for beating their colleagues in Accra last Friday. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Supt. Kwesi Ofori explained that the use of the tear gas enabled the police to achieve the lawful enforcement objective by dispersing the teachers and re-establishing police primacy and rule of law. He added that teachers who are suppose to be role models in the country rather became riotous and hurled stones at the police, violating Act 491 of the public order law in the process. Supt. Ofori noted that the Ghana Police Service owes the teachers no apology because they used lawful means in dispersing the demonstrating teachers. He observed that in a democratic state like Ghana, law enforcement is very key and paramount for the society to move in the right direction. Contrary to what the public perceive as a disgraceful act by the police; Superintendent Kwesi Ofori said “the police will do things within the confines of the law based on our police model called PLAN."
