Security analyst and Director of research at the Kofi Annan Peace keeping centre Dr. Emmanuel Kwesi Aning has urged Mr Allassane Ouattara to ensure that there is peace and stability in the country following the arrest of his nemesis Laurent Gbagbo.
He said Mr Ouattara must act as a statesman and start processes leading to reconciliation, dialogue and some form of engagement with the supporters of Mr. Gbagbo.
Laurent Gbagbo was detained in the main city of Abidjan and delivered to the headquarters of his elected successor on Monday following months of fighting.
Mr Gbagbo had been refusing to cede power to Mr Ouattara after losing November's presidential election.
But speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM Tuesday, Dr. Aning said even though Gbagbo's arrest is a welcome news, the nature of Mr. Gbagbo’s capture could have its own implications as the country turns the corner to put a tempestuous past behind.
Dr. Aning said “if it is proven beyond any shadow of doubt – which I know that eventually it will be proven - that it was French Special Forces who actually captured him, then it will be easy for [Gbagbo’s] Nationalists to come back and say look Mr. Ouattara has not become a President on the basis of his own strength.”
To him this will severely undermine the credibility of the Ouattara regime as it will define the initial survival of the government.
Asked whether Mr Gbagbo should be hauled before the courts for superintending over the killing of civilians in the country, Dr. Aning responded in the affirmative insisting that:
“Irrespective of how fair a trial is for Mr Gbagbo, it opens old wounds and I think until Ouattara has a firm grasp on power, until he has a firm grasp on the economy, until people’s hurts and tensions have calmed down, I would argue that putting Mr. Gbagbo on trial right now might be counterproductive.”
He however stressed “[Gbagbo] must go on trial, he must be put on trial. There is no doubt about that.”
He is of the view that Ouattara will have a challenge on his hand trying to assimilate his rebel forces into the regular Ivorian army but believes Ghana and South Africa would be of immense help in this regard.
