Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, (COPEC) Ghana is expecting the incoming government to implement a comprehensive transportation policy to regulate transport fares between commuters and transport owners.

This call becomes necessary due to unfair treatment commuters experience anytime there is a price adjustment in transport fares.

In an interview with JOYBUSINESS, Executive Secretary of the Chamber, Duncan Amoah noted that a transportation policy has become necessary to prevent an arbitrary increase in lorry fares which has been described as unfair.

According to him, consumers are being cheated by transport owners due to lack of a clear policy direction on how transportation fares must be handled in the country.

Mr Amoah disclosed that the Chamber will be meeting this week to finalise plans to forward the proposed policy document to the government.

The Council is therefore expected to meet this week to begin plans to forward the policy proposal to government and other stakeholders in the petroleum downstream sector.

With the introduction of the deregulation policy by government last year, Bulk Distribution Companies are expected to fix prices on their commodities without the state intervention.

A situation many describe as beneficial to the consumer because this will allow transport owners to select from the list of BDCs to purchase their commodity.

According to COPEC GH, the Ghanaian consumer and road commuters are been cheated by transport owners due to lack of a clear policy direction on how transportation fares must be handled in the country.
