A member of the legal team of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Chris Ackumey says he is excited at the invitation extended to him by the Chief Justice to substantiate his corruption allegation against an unnamed judge. He says he is excited because the invitation affords him the rare opportunity to open the can of worms about the massive corruption in the judiciary. Mr Ackumey alleged last week on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme that he, together with others, paid a GHS500 bribe to a judge in 2008. He was subsequently invited, according to a letter signed by Justice Julius Ansah, a Justice of the Supreme Court and Director of the Complaints Unit of the Judicial Service and given May 31, 2011 as the deadline for him to respond to the invitation to prove his assertions. Mr Ackumey insists he is not perturbed by the invitation, believing it will set the tone for some corrupt judges to be exposed as well as give Chief Justice Georgina Wood the evidence she needs to cleanse the judiciary. “As I talk to you, I continue to receive text messages from people, policemen giving instances, and others; so I believe this will give the opportunity for the Chief Justice to be aware of the real situation so as to tackle it in the best interest of the nation”. Mr Chris Akcumey, who was speaking on the Big Bite on Xfm 95.1 Wednesday, said he expects the judicial Council to use the evidence he and others will provide to take actions that will improve the justice system. But if they use the incident to punish those who provide the evidence, “that is their cup of tea,” he said. Mr Ackumey became the fifth lawyer called upon to substantiate allegations of bribery and corruption against the judiciary in two weeks. The four other lawyers, David Annan, Dr Raymond Atuguba, Mr Larry Bimi and Dr Abraham Amaliba made similar comments and were referred to the General Legal Council to go provide proof of their allegations.
