Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has highlighted the need for increased, aggressive push towards girl-child education. He said it was important for all to join in efforts at making the school environment friendly to the girl child. Everything should be done to provide adequate infrastructure, particularly in girls’ schools and incentive packages to motivate them pursue academic careers, the king advised. Otumfuo Osei Tutu said this when the Board of Directors of the Afia Kobi Serwaah Ampem Girls’ Senior High School (SHS) paid a courtesy call on him at his Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The officials were at the palace to officially introduce the newly appointed headmistress, Ms Esuande Fameye Eshun, to Otumfuo. The Asantehene said it should not be lost on anybody that women’s empowerment through education would significantly aid the fight to reduce poverty and quicken the pace of the nation’s socio-economic development. He pledged his unwavering determination to rally the necessary support towards education development. Otumfuo praised the management and board of the school for the good job they were doing and urged the headmistress to work harder to sustain the high academic performance of the school. Nana Gyamfi Nantwi, spokesperson for the board, lauded the Asantehene for assisting to upgrade facilities in the school. The school, previously called Atwimaman Senior Secondary School, was re-named about 10 years ago. Source: GNA
