The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the judiciary to expedite judgment on election-related cases in order to avoid future political violence. Johnson Asiedu Nketia said although the Chief Justice gave assurances ahead of the 2008 polls that all elections related cases would be addressed speedily, many were yet to be resolved. He warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could send the wrong signals to perpetrators of political violence. The NDC General Secretary, who was speaking to journalists in Accra, said, “People are able to engage in political violence and get away with it and it serves as a motivation for other people to engage in political violence because if it is through violence that you will win a particular constituency or a particular presidential elections…then it sends a signal that if you want to be a MP, prepare for violence.” He said the nation must make political violence a very expensive enterprise. “One of the ways of making [political violence] a very expensive enterprise is the adjudication of cases that arise out of political violence; speedy adjudication of cases that arise out of rigging and manipulation of elections,” he stated.
