The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is asking Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, to rescind his decision to outlaw students sharing beds popular referred to as ‘perching’ on campus. According to the Union’s president Hamza Suhuyini, the Vice Chancellor’s policy smacks of over-ambitiousness and asked him to hasten with caution. “It is not feasible; it is not possible [to ban perching] at this material moment, the Vice Chancellor must be prepared to sack the more than 20,000 students who are engaged in perching,” Suhuyini told Joy News. Speaking on a wide range of issues on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey outlined a number of developmental projects executed and are being carried out by the university authorities to give a face-lift to the school. This, he said, would among other things improve accommodation and make life comfortable for students on campus, which would include banning non-residential students from perching. But the NUGS president said the students would welcome any opportunity to have one student in a room, provided it would be affordable. He said given the current student population, vis-a-vis the available accommodation facilities, it would be impossible to rid the country’s tertiary institutions of the problem of students sharing beds. He said even though there are some private hostels around, they are too expensive for the average student. “If [the university authorities] come out with reasonable prices, students would humbly patronize the services of these hostel facilities, but until that is done, I give them my word that efforts to fight perching would be in vain, because students cannot afford."
