Two persons who were arrested by the Police Highway Patrol Unit on the Accra-Dodowa road for possessing narcotic drugs were on Thursday arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court. The two are Jasper Atsu, a.k.a Joseph Atsu, unemployed and Appiah Kofi, a farmer. The two were charged with two counts of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority. They pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been remanded into prison custody to re-appear on August 5, 2011. The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Samuel Sarkwah told the court that on June 3, personnel of the Police Highway Patrol Unit on the Accra-Dodowa road stopped a Ford bus at Pillar 2, Dodowa, for a routine search. He said during the search the police found Atsu carrying six parcels suspected to be cannabis. According to Chief Inspector Sarkwah, a further search led to the discovery of another five parcels of cannabis on Appiah. Chief Inspector Sarkwah said even though the two accused persons admitted to the possession of illicit narcotic drugs, Atsu alleged that all 11 parcels belonged to Appiah, who asked him to help transport them to Accra for sale. He said Appiah refuted the allegation and explained that both of them decided to sell the drugs and use the proceeds to solve their individual problems.
