Following the infamous Amina saga, the management of Mensah Sarbah Hall of the University of Ghana (Legon) has banned students from entertaining visitors from outside the hall before 5am and after 12 midnight.
Students who fail to heed this directive risk being suspended or losing their residential status.
This was announced during a hall meeting between students, Junior Common Room (JCR) executives, hall management and the Dean of Students of the institution on Wednesday.
Six students of the hall were suspended while one was dismissed after they were accused of abusing a lady whom they claim had been stealing items such as mobile phones and laptops from the hall.
Amina Haruna, who is neither a resident in Mensah Sarbah hall nor a student of the university, was assaulted and sexually molested by angry students of the hall after they caught her with a stolen item.
Dilating on the issue, Hall Master Dr George Dapaah told the students the Amina incident could have been avoided if there were stringent measures in place.
According to him, Amina could not have entered the hall in the first place let alone think of stealing anything if the directive had taken effect prior to the unfortunate incident.
Henceforth, only students will be allowed to enter the hall, Dr Dapaah maintained, advising students to carry their ID cards always for easy identification.
The news did not sit well with some students who murmured while listening to the hall master throw more light on the directive.
Richard Amoah, a level 300 student of the hall told myjoyonline.com in an interview that the authorities had a point yet he thought the measures were too strict.
Most of us are above 18-years and thus are not minors anymore, he remarked, insisting that “you (authorities) should accord us some respect”.
Richard was of the view that although the directive was being instituted to protect students there had to be exceptions.
“I don’t know if there has to be restrictions in the time that we learn," frustrated Richard lamented, maintaining, "we are in a learning institution and they have to promote learning.”
But Dr Dapaah, told myjoyonline.com in a telephone interview that the policy was instituted by the university and that his duty was to ensure the rights of students ware not trampled upon.
He observed that he would do his best to make sure students were comfortable but admitted he could not please everybody.
Dr Dapaah said he did not anticipate any disturbance on the part of the students but he did not rule out the possibility.
