The Northern Regional Police Command has intensified both day and night patrols on major highways in the region as part of measures to curb the rising spate of armed robbery.
As part of the measures, the command will also increase the number of checkpoints on the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway.
ACP George Tuffour, the Northern Regional Police Commander, made this known in a statement to the media on Tuesday and added that security personnel would also continue to escort buses from Tamale to other parts of the country especially on the Tamale-Bolga and Tamale-Buipe roads.
He said similar measures had been instituted on the Bole-Bamboi and Buipe-Mpaha roads to ensure the safety of travelers on those roads.
ACP Tuffout, however, noted that the success or other wise of measures would depend greatly on the cooperation of public especially drivers and vehicle owners and appealed to the public to assist the security personnel to stem the tide.
He said though the measures initiated by the command might inconvenience both passengers and drivers, it was necessary to support the measures and urged the passengers to be vigilant and report any suspicious character on board to the security personnel.
Travellers in the Northern Region had of late been apprehensive of the frequent armed robbery incidents on some of the highways in the area.
The latest was when two people including an O.A bus driver were killed by armed robbers on Nabogu-Pong Tamale stretch of the Tamale-Bolga highways.
