The Chiefs and the people of Gomoa Benso in the Central Region are constructing a Computer Laboratory and an Early-Childhood Development Centre at the cost of 300 million cedis. Mr Samuel Kobina Mensah, Chairman of the Gomoa Benso Akwambo Planning Implementation Committee, announced this at a durbar of the chiefs and the people to climax their annual Akwambo festival on Saturday. He said the projects, which had reached roofing level would enhance Information Communication and Technology (ICT) and the quality education in the town. Mr Mensah said the Lab and the Centre, which were being financed through the contribution of 10,000 cedis per female and 20,000 cedis a male would be completed in March this year. He stated that the people through the assistance of Nana Takyi Wiabo V, Chief of Gomoa Benso, had instituted an incentive package to motivate Basic School teachers to produce their best to improve the quality of education in the area. The Chairman spoke of plans to construct a modern public toilet to ensure sanitation in the town. Mr Mensah who is also Excel Filling Station Manager at Agona Swedru said the festival afforded an opportunity for the citizens leaving in Accra, Cape Coast, Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi and other cities to visit home to contribute towards the development of the town. He noted that the Computer Laboratory would also assist the children from nearby towns such as Gomoa Aboso, Gomoa Akropong, and Ekroful to be computer literate. Mr Mensah said the Unit Committee and the Benso Traditional Council had proposed a by-law for approval by the Gomoa District Assembly to ban children under 14 years from social events after 8.clock in the evening to enable students and pupils to study. He appealed to the District Assembly and the MP for Gomoa East, Mr Richmond Sam Quarm, to support the self-help projects of the people. Nana Takyi Wiabo, Odikro of Benso, urged parents in the town to send their children to school since education was the key to poverty reduction and the elimination of teenage pregnancies in the area. The Chief pledged to assist the people to rehabilitate roads, school blocks and tackle other issues hindering the development of the town. Nana Takyi Wiabo known in private life as Mr Richmond Aggrey called on the people to unite to ensure peace and stability. GNA
