Rector of the Spiritan University at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region is urging education authorities to name and shame private tertiary institutions whose standards are found to be persistently low.
Reverend Francis Ato Jackson-Donkor says this could effectively address concerns by the Education Ministry about some private tertiary institutions cutting corners in admission procedures to increase enrolment.
He says a blanket statement by the Ministry to suggest some schools are breaking the rules without naming them is unfair to those who are doing their best to maintain and improve standards.
Rev Jackson-Donkor tells Luv News strengthening of checks must go alongside sanctions to ensure strict compliance with laid down procedure.
He says it is up to the National Accreditation Board, National Commission for Tertiary Education to let the public know institutions which are not conforming to the rules and regulations.
“There is something called naming and shaming, it’s the right of the Ghanaians especially the student to know which institution is the right institution to choose, otherwise we are going to have the mushrooming of institutions just like churches are going through’’, Rev.Jackson- Donkor said.
He is also urging the strengthening of the Conference of Heads of Private Universities so they can themselves be check on each other.
He believes if every private institution registers with the group, it will be easier for the body to deal with, policy makers as well as regulatory bodies on behalf of the group.
The group will also be able to help one another and act as checks on each other to ensure the rules are obeyed.
