The Minister for Education, Betty Mould Iddrisu says the New Patriotic Party did not make provision for the four year term for Senior High School.
The opposition NPP proposed a four year term for the SHS when they were in office, but the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) reversed the duration to three years through Legislative Instrument.
In an interview with the Education Minister on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Betty Mould Iddrisu said the NPP proposed the four year term with no infrastructure put in place to start the program.
She noted that the three year duration was reversed by the government based on sound advice from educational experts, adding SHS education in the sub-region is three years and Ghana’s own cannot differ from others.
"All over West Africa the system is a three year system, we know from Primary one to JHS should be a certain number of years, why is it that Ghana alone is standing out in the West African sub-region," Betty Mould Iddirsu added.
Mrs. Betty Mould said because the NPP did not make provision for that the government is spending a lot on infrastructure like construction of dormitories and classrooms.
She said, currently, the Ministry is working on 65 dormitories which are on completion period.
The sector Minister said the cost of these projects is capital intensive and therefore called for collaboration between District Assemblies, Parents and Alumnus to make education the right for every child a reality.
On the issue of free uniform for school children, she said enough uniforms have been supplied to schools especially those in the hinterlands.
The National Coordinator for the National School Feeding Program, Seidu Adamu, also on the show, confirmed that forty Ghana Pesewas is spend on each child per day for the program.
He hinted that it will be increased from forty to fifty Ghana Pesewas soon, adding government will increase budget for the program from GH¢60 million to 200 million for 2012 fiscal year.
