Out of 2,678 candidates who wrote this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality, 1,090 representing 40.7 per cent, failed. The candidates who failed either obtained aggregates higher than 30 or failed in one or more of the core subjects and could therefore not qualify to gain admission in any Senior High School. Mrs. Christina Cobinah, Municipal Chief Executive for Tarkwa-Nsueam, revealed this in Tarkwa when the Assembly held its last meeting for this year. According to the MCE, 1,588 passed representing 59.3 per cent while one school scored zero per cent. Mrs Cobbinah said a new module has been introduced to train the youth in the repair of computers and mobile phones under the National Youth Employment programme. “So far fifty youth have been enrolled in the programme with the idea of giving them Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills to make them self employed,” she added. Mrs. Cobbinah said the assembly intends to renovate some rooms at the community center for the permanent running of the programme since they are presently occupying the assembly hall. Mr. Eric Koffie Sekyi, Education Sub-committee chairman for the assembly, expressed regret about the poor performance of candidates. He said the sub-committee will from next term visit schools within the Municipality to interact with teachers and students to find out if there are any challenges and find appropriate solutions to the poor results of the pupils within the municipality. According to him, vacation classes as well as mock examinations will be organized for final year students in the Junior High schools to enable them prepare adequately for the BECE. Mr. Sekyi said the sub-committee will liaise with chiefs in their respective communities to set up by-laws against students’ visit to video game centres and funerals. The Sub-committee Chairman reiterated that with all these measures, he believes that students would perform better at the 2012 BECE.
