International Human Rights outfit, Amnesty International, has named top Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and controversial musician Femi Kuti amongst a list of personalities and art organisations which it says will help champion its activities across the world. The personalities selected from different spheres of film and theatre, music, gigs and tours, visual arts and festivals across the world will help champion Amnesty International’s Art for Amnesty which works with musicians, actors and artists around the world. These personalities, the outfit says will help give human rights a more powerful voice by raising their profile and funds for their work across the world. Art for Amnesty is a global project which works with art organisations and artists who believe in human rights. By adding their voices to their campaigns, artists help the organisation reach out to their audiences. They will use their exceptional skills and talents, to spread the human rights message across countries and continents and inspire people to act. Omotola was selected in the field of film and theatre. Other personalities selected under that category include British actress Keira Knightley; American actress Patricia Clarkson; British actor Jeremy Irons; Jefferson Hack, a publisher and co-founder of Dazed and Confused magazine, which covers British music, art, fashion and film, as well as Dazed Digital and Dazed Film & TV; Star Trek star Patrick Stewart; British actress Alice Eve and others. Femi Kuti, the second Nigerian in the list was selected in the music, gigs and tours category. Femi is in that category with other renowned music personality such as U2 award-winning DJ, singer-songwriter and musician, Moby, British band Bombay Bicycle Club, British singers Peter and Bob, among others. The Hay Festivals of Literature and Arts, and Shoreditch 1,2,3,4 Festival make up the festivals category while Mentalgassi, an anonymous German street art collective, and Yoko Ono, an influential artist make up the visual arts category. Omotola’s citation read: “Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is a leading Nigerian ‘Nollywood’ actress and singer, with a huge fan base across Africa and the Caribbean. Omotola launched Amnesty International’s maternal mortality campaign in Sierra Leone and supports our campaign for freedom of expression.”
