The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is pleading with the media not to publish nude photographs of a songstress’ captured while she performed on-stage without undies but with a scant top at a show in December 2011. In a press statement released by the union Tuesday, it said, the musicians body has “taken notice of media reports concerning a Ghanaian female musician whose dressing mistakenly led to some private parts of her body been captured by a photo journalist during a recent performance.” According to MUSIGA, their investigations into the reports have revealed that whereas there is some proof of the story, “this was due to an unfortunate costume mishap,” adding, “MUSIGA is highly concerned that this issue has gone too far with the media taking great interest in it.” The newspaper, Daily Guide, which broke the story, indicated that it will publish the said photograph (uncensored) of the musician on its front pages on January 6. The MUSIGA statement which was signed by Spokesperson, Kwame Nsiah Apau popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, said, “In as much as MUSIGA respects the freedoms of the media and appreciate its contribution to the growth of the music industry, the Union would want to intervene in this instance and call for a ceasefire on this issue.” “Inappropriate dressing,” the statement added, “among some Ghanaian Musicians has become a major source of concern not only to the general Ghanaian populace but to members of the Union and steps are being taken by the new administration to educate its members on paying heed to cultural sensitivities in their public appearance and pronouncements.” MUSIGA, under the leadership of President Obour, according to the statement, would be rolling out programmes through workshops and seminars to educate its members on several issues including artiste appearance and dressing.
