The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has been presented with the President’s Global Leadership Award by the University of South Florida (USF) in the United States. The award is the highest international recognition the university bestows on individuals for exemplary accomplishments in international leadership and global relations. Prof Opoku-Agyemang, who is also the Board Chairperson of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), is the first and only woman to hold the topmost academic position in a public university in Ghana. Until her appointment as vice-chancellor of the UCC, she served as the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Head of the Department of English at the same university. Under Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership, the UCC and the USF have established a faculty exchange programme which has produced unparalleled scholarly opportunities for faculty and students in both universities. “The author of many publications, Prof Opoku-Agyemang has written extensively on education leadership, slavery and the slave trade. She served as a visiting and exchange scholar in the United States, Europe and Africa and most recently as the Presidential International Visiting Scholar at Wheelock College in Boston. “In addition to her role at the university, Prof Opoku-Agyemang has chaired and been a member of over 30 international boards and committees, including UNESCO and the School for International Training,” a citation read by the President of the USF, Judy Genshaft, said. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to education and being the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in Ghana, the State conferred on her the prestigious state honour of Officer of the Order of the Volta. She has received numerous honours, including Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University of the West Indies and Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) by the Winston Salem State University.
