Out of the 426 students the Okuapeman School presented for the 2011 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), 417 scored very good grades in six and eight subjects. Most of the students are now pursuing various courses at the universities and other tertiary institutions. The headmaster of the school, Mr Felix Essah-Hienno, made this known at the school’s 55th speech and prize-giving day. The event which was themed “Moral Discipline and Academic Excellence-The Way Forward”, was attended by old students and dignitaries such as the Mamfehene, Osabarima Ansah Sasraku, an old student of the school and Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, one-time Minister of Local Government and Foreign Affairs and currently a senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). Mr Essah-Hienno said almost all the students qualified for tertiary institutions and that out of the 194 students who opted for Elective Mathematics, which they perceived to be the most difficult subject, 81 had A1, while 22 out of the 31 students who studied Management-In-Living also scored A1. Also, 81 out of the 108 who opted for Business Management had A1, and 28 out of 34 candidates who studied Graphics also had A1. The most significant performance, Mr Essah-Hienno stated, was in Ceramics which all the 34 students presented for the examinations had A1. According to Mr Essah-Hienno, the academic performance of the school at the WASSCE, which improves each year is due to discipline and the seriousness of both students and the teaching staff and added that the school had been transformed into one of the best in the country. Mr Essah-Hienno also commended the students and staff for the academic achievement of the school and the parent-teacher association (PTA) for helping to improve the infrastructure of the school . He, however, called for the rehabilitation of the roads leading to the school. He also called for the replacement of the school’s two vehicles which had become too old. In his address, Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, who was the guest speaker, emphasised that discipline was a pre-requisite for achieving academic laurels. He also said a morally disciplined student was the one who eschewed negative traits and respected himself, the rights of other students and image of the school. He added that since moral discipline was a necessary leadership requirement, the students and teachers should to exhibit discipline at all times. Professor Ahwoi, who is also an old student of the school, said it was discipline that had put him in his present position and asked the students to study hard to make them useful citizens. Prizes were presented to teachers and students who distinguished themselves in the course of the academic year.
