Authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has assured students and other members of the university community of adequate security protection.
This comes on the heels of last night’s robbery attack on a supermarket close to the Unity Hall of the university.
A bullet from a gun shot by the robbery gang grazed the side of the head of Joyce Appiah, a shop attendant, who was initially reported to be a student.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), after a crisis meeting held by the KNUST Council with the military and police on Friday, Mr Kingsley Owusu Tabi of the University Relations Office, said adequate arrangements had been put in place to strengthen security on the campus.
There would be regular joint night patrols by the military and police.
He therefore urged the students to remain calm and to go about their academic work and other activities without fear.
The welfare of students, he said, was paramount to the University and that everything would be done to ensure their safety.
Mr Tabi urged the students not to hesitate to report to the authorities suspicious characters for swift action.
The robbers, who struck at about 2030 hours just after the Metropolis had been buffeted by a heavy rainfall, seized mobile phones and cash from their victims at the canteen and the Continental (Unity) Supermarket amidst gunshots.
Joyce, who sustained the gunshot wound, is receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Centre of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and is said to be in a stable condition.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nicholas Opare-Ofosuhene, Zongo Divisional Commander told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that they had mounted a search for the criminals.
They would also work together with the internal security network of the KNUST to protect life and property.
