The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International has asked all public officers who contested political party primaries to resign immediately in accordance with the law. Quoting relevant sections of the Constitution, the Criminal Code, the Political Parties Act and other statutes, the GII said those who took part in the primaries should have resigned their posts before contesting their parties’ primaries. A statement signed by the Executive Secretary, Vitus Azeem said the Head of the Civil Service and the Chairman of the Public Services Commission should take steps to identify all such public officers who have publicly declared their party affiliation and sanction them accordingly, if they have not already resigned. He told Joy News the appropriate authorities would also have to sanction all public officers who continue to appear in the media or political party platforms to speak on behalf of any political party or are seen wearing party paraphernalia. Mr Azeem, who refused to name specific individuals, said “…we (GII) are not targeting anybody; this is a general reminder to what the law says that as people who want to contest and go to parliament and represent us they have to be interested in going by the law.” He however noted that if they realize that some individuals are still holding on to their positions, the appropriate steps will be taken.
