Students from five Junior High Schools in Agona District in the Central Region failed in the 2007 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mr Ben Mensah, Agona District Chief Executive who disclosed this to newsmen at Agona Swedru however did not mention the schools but said the Agona District Directorate of Education has instituted measures to improve the situation this year.
He said during the 2006 BECE students from six schools failed and pledged the commitment of the assembly to collaborate with the directorate to adopt effective strategies to ensure the students improved on their performance.
Mr Mensah said the measures would include improvement of infrastructure and motivation of teachers especially in the five schools to ensure effective teaching and learning.
He said the assembly would in addition, ensure that trained teachers posted to remote areas were encouraged to stay and work hard.
Mr Mensah said the assembly was constructing a six-classroom block with an office and store at Agona Fawomanye, near Agona Kwanyako.
He said schools with deplorable structures would be rehabilitated as part of efforts to improve education in the district and appealed to teachers to redouble their efforts to promote education in the area.
Mr Mensah asked parents, Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) School Management Committees (SMCs) and other stakeholders in education to live up to expectation to ensure better results in future.
