Disqualified Ghanaian representative of this year's Big Brother StarGame reality show, Derick Kobina Boney (DKB) is set to embark on a nationwide Anti-Gender Violence campus tour. The comedian, who was one of three Ghanaian representatives to show, was on Monday, June 4 disqualified for slapping Sierra Leonean Zainab who peeped at him while he was taking a shower. He, together with Zainab, was disqualified from the 91-day reality show on the basis of what organisers, MNet and Endemol, described as violence that contravened the rules of the game. His action received worldwide condemnation from many who saw it as demeaning, unethical and an affront to the fight against violence against women. He rendered an unqualified apology and recently released an apology song for his actions. A statement released by his management, Ecstasy Entertainment and Boom Entertainment, said "DKB is ready to use the experience he gathered from the violent scandal he was involved in, with a fellow housemate that caused his disqualification to educate and create awareness among the youth." The Anti-Gender Violence campus tour will take him to some of the country's Senior High Schools, universities and polytechnics from July 6. The campaign, according to the statement, is under the theme: “Stop gender violence - respect yourself" and it is geared towards discouraging acts of provocation and violence from men to women and vice versa. According to DKB's management, "he had to go through an anger management programme in order to come out reformed, improved and empowered to educate the young ones on the consequences of uncontrolled anger." "He is approaching the High School students preceding the higher institutions because they are the ones from which adults are formed and must be well informed and made aware of the repercussions of uncontrolled anger culminating into violence and how to deal with it so they become better adults," the statement added. DKB will start the tour from his alma mater, St. John’s Grammar School, and it will also see him at Labone High School, St. Mary’s High School, Presec, Accra Academy, Accra High School and other Senior High Schools in the country. At each venue, he will hold talk session with the support of a clinical psychologist and a domestic violence representative. There will be question and answer sessions, photo opportunities, autograph signing and a sizzling performance of his Apology song. DKB said he hopes the initiative will positively impact the youth and also prepare them towards a violence free elections.
