Gospel musician Cwesi Oteng has won Video of the Year at the 2012 edition of the Africa Gospel Awards (AGMA) which came off at the Golders Green Hippodrome in London Saturday night.
He won the award with his video, God Dey Bless Me, and had to beat off competition from I Go Dance by Sammie Okposo (Nigeria), One Man Pita (Nigeria), Senjela by Dena Mwana (Congo), and Halelujah Hosanna by Patrick Duncan (South Africa).
The rest are, Dakika Tatu by Daddy Owen (Kenya), I Believe by Rebecca (UK), I'm Walking by Alemba and Exodus (Uganda), Yo Ozali by Makoma (Holland), and Song for Peace in Nigeria by Nigeria All Stars.
The AGMA, which is in its third year, recognizes and celebrates the work of gospel musicians and also showcase their talent and success.
There were 23 categories in this year’s awards covering the whole spectrum of music and industry related activities such as composition, singing, promotion, media and projects across Africa and the Diaspora.
Cwesi Oteng, however, lost out on two other categories he was nominated for. He lost the Song of the Year to Ololo by Emmy Kosgei (Kenya) and Artiste of the Year (West Africa) to Frank Edwards (Nigeria).
Cwesi told Myjoyonline.com in an interview that he saw the award coming: “Yes I thought we had worked hard enough and we actually planned to do a video that can compete on that level and actually win. I am very happy because one of my major goals is to revolutionize the video sector of gospel music and by God’s grace we seem to be causing a storm already.”
He said although he was aiming at bagging all the three awards, he was satisfied with the one he won.
“Well I thought I was on point for all the three categories. I was competing with a couple of Nigerians and since it was by votes, I’m sure population came to play but I am very satisfied with the award I got, Best Gospel Video is quite big for Africa so I am cool,” he said.
Cwesi disclosed that he couldn’t make it to the awards because he “had other arrangements here that needed my personal attention. Every arrangement was in place for me was in place for me to go but I decided to stay. I was actually supposed to perform there.”
He is expected to receive his award by Friday.
Ghanaian gospel artiste based in the UK, Sonnie Badu also won two awards on the night. He won Album of the Year and also received a special recognition award.
