Gyedu Blay Ambolley has declared himself the originator of rap music not only across Ghana, but worldwide.
Speaking to Blakk Rasta on Hitz FM's “Taxi Driver” show, the ace highlife mogul said “I was the first person to commercialise rap music and I have documents that date far back to 1973 to prove it. People will identify that if they check my music archives.”.
Ambolley is challenging the Guinness World Records that states Sugarhill Gang as the pioneer of rap music.
The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop group that became famous after their 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight," the first hip hop single to become a Top 40 hit in the US.
He also added that, after returning to Ghana from the USA, he realised that Hip Life artistes were hailing Reggie Rockstone as the “God Father” of Hip-Life.
The "Sekonde" star however maintained that he does not have a problem with people acknowledging Rockstone as the founder of rap music in Ghana.
“Reggie calls me “Poppy” all the time and considers me as a musical father figure. He gives me that due respect as the originator of the music style that he (Reggie) catapulted".
He praised Reggie Rockstone for his massive contribution to making Hip-Life big in Ghana music.
