The Adansi South District Assembly is to make the sponsorship for teacher trainees more attractive to enable the District to have enough teachers to fill vacancies in the schools.
Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, District Chief Executive, who announced this at the Assembly's meeting at New Edubiase in Ashanti, added that management would design a more binding agreement with the trainees to make them return to the District after completing their training.
According to him, out of a total number of 161 trainees sponsored by the Assembly in 2004, only 58 were posted to the District with the rest posted to other districts "which used their funds on other projects dear to them".
Mr Dorpenyoh said a lot of vacancies existed in schools, which needed to be filled to enhance teaching and learning and thereby improve the District's performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The DCE said, however, that the District's performance was steadily improving as the 2006 BECE results showed that only one school had 100 per cent pass with six schools recording zero per cent whilst four schools obtained 100 per cent passes with two schools scoring zero per cent.
"The most impressive school for the 2007 academic year is District Assembly Experimental Junior High School (JHS) at New Edubiase, which was third in 2006 but took the first position this year", he said.
Mr Dorpenyoh wondered why Ampunyase JHS, which came first in the District last year fell from that position to 17th despite the motivation and incentives the Assembly gave the school for the feat.
On the School Feeding Programme, the DCE said five schools had been selected to start the programme on a pilot basis with pupils in Kojo Yentumi and Afiaso already enjoying the programme.
Mr Dorpenyoh said the Assembly was making a lot of efforts to get more schools hooked on to the programme.
