Shirley Frimpong-Manson's name has been on the lips of movie patrons for some years now. She is referred to as 'Ghana's finest' in the movie industry, an attribute she attained because of the sheer excellence she exhibits in her movies.
Her latest production, Checkmate has already got people waiting impatiently to watch the movie that is expected to be released on April 1.
The movie has a surprise entrant, Senanu Gbedawo, who joins the list of fresh talents to have hit the movie scene. He is the lead actor in Shirley's ‘Checkmate’.
Strangely enough, this happens to be his first major role in any movie although he has featured in ‘Suncity’ and ‘Money and Fame’, two popular television series some time ago.
Engineer/actor
In an interview with Myjoyonline.com after the press preview of the movie at the Silverbird Cinema Tuesday morning, Senanu disclosed that he is an Aerospace Engineer.
He is a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and currently doing his national service with the Ghana Air Force.
The press preview was organised to give the media a preview of the movie before its official release. Some stars of the movie KSM, Ekow Blankson, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku and Khareema Aguiar attended the preview.
Senanu also disclosed that although he is into aerospace engineering and would love to be a pilot in future, acting has been an in-born passion, which he enjoys doing it.
“You have to do whatever makes you happy. I went to School to study aerospace engineering but I have been acting for a while now, from childhood, so this gives me the opportunity to do something that I love and I feel comfortable doing it so if by the end of the day I have to become an actor, we will see what the industry brings.”
Senanu expressed shock at getting a leading role in the movie since he has never ventured in any serious role in the movie scene, “For me initially it was a shock because when I went for the auditioning and Shirley said I have got the role, even as then I thought she was talking about two or three scenes because to get into a sparrow productions movie, then you are good."
"Then she said the story was about me and I’m still looking at her; what are you talking about? But then she said I was a lead character and if i will be able to deliver,” he added.
Senanu's role
In the Checkmate, Senanu plays the role of Kwame who made all the right moves in his life; a good job, a beautiful devoted wife, an adorable child, and an impending promotion as a senior customs officer at the airport.
But what seems like a typical guys hang out on a weekend away from home in the company of his new friend and mentor, Kiki (played by Ekow Blankson), turns out to be the one wrong move Kwame makes. After losing a game of Chess, he succumbs to a bet to seduce the attractive, sexy Caroline (played by Nadia Buari).
A few weeks later, the consequences of a dirty forgotten weekend pops up in Kwame’s life, threatening to destroy everything he so dearly loves. But the games are just beginning when he realizes that Caroline’s demand for his love is nothing compared to the demands of a drug lord who will do anything to get Kwame’s assistance in smuggling drugs out of the country.
With his entire life hanging on a thread, Kwame must try to win the game or risk losing everything.
The Checkmate also stars, KSM, Nadia Buari, Ekow Blankson, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, Khareema Aguiar and Kwaku Boateng.
