Programmes Manager at the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has described as unfortunate President Akufo-Addo’s decision to accept Martin Amidu’s resignation letter.
Mary Awelana Addah in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story Tuesday said "the whole development has really questioned the readiness of the country to deal with corruption activities."
She, however, stressed that it was important for President Akufo-Addo to expedite processes to appoint an individual who is equally qualified to fill the gap.
According to her, an immediate transition will ensure the smooth running of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, despite Mr Amidu’s exit adding that, “if President Akufo-Addo didn’t know of anybody who is as qualified as Amidu, he wouldn’t have accepted his resignation.”
“We would have wished that the President didn’t accept the resignation but moving forward we want the President to quickly replace him with somebody who is equally as competent, credible, and someone who is seen and regarded as a person of integrity.
“Otherwise it would have some disastrous implication on the office since people will question the effectiveness of it and ask if the Office of the Special Prosecutor should be in place at all,” she stated.
Martin Amidu on Monday tendered in a letter to resign from his post as special Prosecutor following his appointment in 2018.
According the Mr Amidu, President Akufo-Addo is making him a “poodle” of his government and since he [Amidu] is an honourable man and a person of integrity he will refuse to let himself be compromise by partisan influence.
The President after 24 hours of receiving the letter accepted the resignation of Mr. Amidu, popularly known as Citizen Vigilante.
