Numo Blafo, Public Relations Officer of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, (AMA) has appealed to the youth of Kotobabi to reconsider their entrenched position and allow the construction of a school at the Unity Cluster of Schools at Kotobabi.
The youth are contending that the site serves as recreational facility for the community and the project would prevent them from using it.
Numo Blafo made the appeal at a media briefing in Accra on efforts to solve the problem.
He said the project under the Millennium City School Project was to enhance teaching and learning in public schools after the abolition of the shift system in 2010.
Numo Blafo said with the abolition of the shift system some of the students in the community were housed in a rented premise, the Kotobabi Catering School, so the assembly spent some extra money in the academic year.
He said the proprietor had decided not to renew the contract for renting with the AMA, therefore, there was the need to undertake the project.
Numo Blafo announced that two of the projects at Salvation Army and Mamprobi One Cluster of schools had been completed and would be inaugurated soon.
He said schools under the Millennium School Project would be equipped with an Information and Communication Technology unit, a library, sanitary facilities and teachers’ restrooms.
The AMA is expected to build 48 school blocks but has so far secured funding for the construction of 27 from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and USAID.
Alhaji Abdul Razak, Chairman of Ayawaso East Sub-Metropolitan Area, said the project would help solve some of the accommodation problems facing students in the community.
Alhaji Abu Hamidu, Assemblyman for West Mamobi, said there were more public schools than private schools in the country therefore, the need to put up structures to accommodate the students.
