The Obuasi Mine has marked a major milestone with the successful hosting of the maiden edition of its Engineering Excellence Awards, an initiative designed to recognise outstanding individuals, teams and contractors whose work continues to drive safety, innovation, reliability and operational excellence across the Mine.
The event brought together members of the Obuasi and Iduapriem Mines Site Leadership Teams, industry regulators, representatives from academia, power sector partners and engineering professionals. The strong cross-section of stakeholders underscored the Mine’s commitment to world-class engineering standards, local capacity development and sustainable operational performance.

At the individual level, Orlando Yawson was adjudged Best Engineering Stratum II-H for his exemplary leadership, which transformed KMS Underground maintenance and enabled the zero-incident delivery of critical projects.
Alexander Adusei, winner of Best Engineering Stratum II-L, was recognised for the flawless execution of mine-wide shutdowns in 2025, achieved through meticulous planning, strong collaboration and uncompromising safety discipline.
Women in engineering were prominently celebrated during the ceremony, reflecting the Mine’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. Ing. Sarah Agyen-Mensah received both the Best Engineering Female Employee Award and the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Award for her impactful multidisciplinary contributions across operations. Constance Frimpong was named Best Female Fabricator, while Gifty Ablordey won Best Female Winder Driver, highlighting the growing influence and excellence of women in technical roles at Obuasi.

Team awards showcased the depth and breadth of engineering capability across the Mine. CIC & OT were recognised for excellence in project execution and innovation, Process Plant Engineering for operational reliability, KMS for continuous improvement, and Fixed Plant for safety-by-design practices that enhance asset integrity and workforce protection.
Special honours were also presented to individuals whose leadership and long-term contributions have shaped engineering performance at Obuasi. Managing Director Ing. Samuel Pobee received the Exceptional Impact Award in recognition of his strategic leadership and commitment to engineering excellence. Ing. Moses Tei-Mensah Oletey was named Engineering Personality of the Year, while Awie Frey was honoured with the Lifetime Contribution to Engineering Excellence Award for his enduring influence on operations, safety and people development.

Head of Operations Awie Frey commended awardees for setting high benchmarks and inspiring others to uphold the Mine’s values of safety, innovation and continuous improvement.
The Engineering Excellence Awards are expected to become a flagship annual event, reinforcing Obuasi Mine’s commitment to recognising performance, nurturing talent and delivering responsible, sustainable mining through engineering leadership.
