The Presbyterian Church of Ghana says that it will not hesitate to campaign against Members of Parliament who attempt to block the passage of the anti-LGBTQ Bill.
They become the second Christian religious group to threaten such action in support of the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, which is currently before parliament.
Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, had earlier cautioned the government that the church will vote against politicians who vote against the passage of the bill.
"We’re going to cause people to come onto the street, and we’re going to warn any government that if you vote against this bill, we will vote you out, that is it. There’s no room for neutrality," he told journalists.
Backing the Pentecost Church, spokesperson for the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev George Larbi, said that parliamentarians will be acting against the will of the people they represent should they fight the passage of the bill.
"If you are an MP or a politician and you are in support of LGBTQ+, some of us, as Ministers, will make sure we campaign against you because what you believe is completely opposite what we believe as far as the ideas of the bible is concerned. So we will campaign against that individual or political party," Rev. George Larbi threatened on News Nite on Joy FM.
Various faith-based groups including Islamic clerics in the country have backed proponents of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
These groups, among other things, say that LGBT+ activities are against their beliefs and have no place in the country's customs and traditions.
The bill, when passed, will see culprits being fined or serving a jail term between three to five years.
The Bill is also proposing punishment for LGBT+ advocacy.
However, some have professionals in various fields including law and academics have raised resistance to the passage.
The professionals argue that the passage of the bill will lead to human rights violations.
