The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly condemned the early-morning arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, describing the incident as a “disgrace” to the rule of law and a “shame” to the nation.
According to Kodua, he received a distress call from Mr Kumi early Friday morning, reporting that approximately 20 armed men had surrounded his residence in Adenta, banging on his gate and demanding that he comes out.
Mr Kumi, speaking from inside the house, was reportedly unable to identify the men at the time.
“On my way to his residence, I received another call—this time from his wife—saying he had been taken away and that they told her he was being sent to an office,” Mr Kodua recounted.
The NPP General Secretary said that by the time he arrived at the house, Mr Kumi had already been removed from the premises.
He expressed shock at the state in which he found the property, stating that the front door had been destroyed and a woman living in the house had allegedly been assaulted with the butt of a rifle.
“It’s appalling that officers, whoever they may be, would act in this manner. What crime has Adenta Kumi committed?” Kodua questioned.
“This is someone who, acting as a responsible citizen, submitted a petition to the President after observing what he believed to be wrongdoing. He never received a response—only to be forcibly picked up without explanation.”
Mr Kodua criticised the authorities for failing to follow due process, suggesting the arrest was an act of intimidation.
“Are they trying to put fear into him? Are they trying to intimidate him? If someone has filed a petition, the right course of action is to invite them—not to storm their home without a warrant.”
Mr Kumi’s exact whereabouts remained unknown. However, Kodua confirmed that they had managed to pick the registration number of the vehicle used in the operation—WE 323-11—and had taken photographs of some of the individuals involved.
“We are now on our way to the National Security office to confirm whether he is being held there,” he added.
Background

The arrest comes shortly after Kumi submitted a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adenta, alleged misconduct on the part of the committee members that, he claimed, could compromise the credibility of their inquiry.
In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of meeting with Thaddeus Sory—legal counsel for the petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area after the committee's first hearing on May 15, 2025. Kumi claims the judges were overheard discussing issues related to the petition during the dinner.
A video of the supposed meeting has since gone viral online with many questioning the credibility of the content.
