Artist and jewelry designer Priscilla Korlekour Agyemang founder of Kor.Le.Kour Accessories and visual artist Essilfie Banton last Friday launched MAABE, a Sustainable Art Exhibition at the Marina Mall in Accra.
MAABE which means “mom is not gone ” in Krobo is an effort to bring awareness to the degradation of Ghana’s vegetation and water bodies from various forms of pollution such as Galamsey, water pollution, and plastic waste. The exhibition was supported by Marina Market, Marina Mall and Martini.
“I use different mediums such as repurposed glass, glass beads, Nespresso capsules, plastic waste, and recycled fabric to visually depict Ghana’s future and landscape if action is not taken now to protect the land.
"The MAABE exhibition provided a platform to learn and appreciate sustainability through art and artists,” said Agyeman.
During the programme, Kojo Akoto spoke about the pillars of sustainability: People, Environment, Economy, and Institution and the strategies of sustainability: efficiency, consistency, and sufficiency.
“Allowing producers and importers to accept significant responsibility for the treatment or disposal of post-consumer products, waste will be reduced if not entirely prevented at the source which would assist Ghana’s efforts towards sustainable development,” said Phyllis Squire, a senior sustainability communications practitioner at Green Carpet 21.
The works displayed in the MAABE exhibition included art, jewellery and home decor made from recycled and repurposed materials. Attendees were treated with complimentary cocktails courtesy of Martini.
