The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is expected to deliver his final determination on the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.
President John Dramani Mahama mandated the Asantehene earlier this year to lead renewed efforts toward resolving the decades-old conflict.
Otumfuo’s involvement in this latest mediation process began in April, when he met delegations from the opposing factions between April 28 and 30 to revive dialogue and set the foundation for constructive engagement.
Although the talks were briefly suspended, proceedings resumed on May 13. At the time, the Asantehene noted that the discussions had contributed to a period of relative calm in the municipality.
Bawku has been plagued for years by intermittent violence, sporadic attacks, and heightened tensions—resulting in loss of life, restricted movement, and the imposition of curfews. These persistent tensions have disrupted livelihoods, weakened community cohesion, and sparked nationwide concern over the urgent need for lasting peace.
According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s session marks the culmination of months of intensive consultations and peace-building efforts.
Many residents and national observers remain hopeful that the Asantehene’s final pronouncement will pave the way for reconciliation, stability, and development in the conflict-hit area.
