Prison authorities in the Ashanti Region have ramped up anti-Covid-19 protocols at the various facilities to curb any unpleasant situations.
This development comes after an inmate at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons tested positive for Covid-19, forcing authorities to quarantine seven officers who came into contact with the infected person.
Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Samuel Owusu Amponsah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons, stated that all safety measures have been set up and being strictly implemented to prevent further cases of the infection
“We have put in place the protocols and we make sure that anybody who comes here to visit must go through that protocols before we allow the person in.”
“We have set aside a place where we observe them for 21 days before we allow them to integrate with the other inmates,” he told JoyNews’ Nana Asenso Mensah.
Meanwhile, head of female prisons at the central command, Assistant Director of Prisons (ADP), Christiana Asiedu, lamented the significant reduction in donations hence the struggle to feed prisoners.
“The challenge we have is how to feed the inmates. We are appealing to the public because before the Covid-19, people come to visit us but now people are afraid and do not want to go anywhere,” she said.
ADP Asiedu assured donors of their safety should they decide to visit the prison to support the facility with needed materials.
