The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament has directed all Members of Parliament to show up on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, to pass a new law to support President Akufo-Addo’s emergency measures to deal with the spread of coronavirus.
Addressing the House on Monday, Alban Bagbin indicated that the bill is very essential and must be rigorously addressed to find a sustainable solution to the deadly virus in our country.
“Tomorrow [Tuesday] we expect Members of Parliament to be here in their numbers for us to do a very essential business for mother Ghana,” he said.
Meanwhile, some MPs including Kwabena Mintah Akando and Mahama Ayariga have called for a suspension of sitting in line with the President’s directive against congregations of more than 25 people.
But the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, says that cannot be a green light for the House not to sit.
“When we met the President today [Monday], he wanted us to do some work, and discharged some responsibilities which will require us to make decisions.
“So people should not be simplistic in their rationalisation or decoding of what the President has said, because it is important that we meet.”
MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, however, defended the position of the Minority MPs insisting, their concerns were genuine since there are 275 members in this House and they do not sit two meters away from each other.
