Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly called ‘Bahubali’, who died just days after his last fight, has left behind a four-month-old baby boy.
The pugilist was involved in a bout on September 12 with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was stopped in the eighth round.
Reports suggest he suffered internal bleeding, with his death confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday.
In an interview with JoySports, acting Ghana Boxing Authority President Roger Banor said: “I would like to take this opportunity to convey our condolence to the family of Bahubali and all boxing loving fans.”
“The very unfortunate incident has taken away a father of a four-month-old baby boy.
"Bahubali has a son who is just four months old and it is very unfortunate that something of this has happened and he [the baby] will live without his father but we will be there to support him as a father,” he added.
Bahubali’s passing is the second tragedy in Ghanaian boxing this year, after Gabriel Aluwasegun in April.
The GBA has vowed to ensure medical care for boxers after bouts.
