The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Otchere Baafi, has praised former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most dependable figure, recalling his defining role during the 2012 election petition.
Addressing NPP delegates in Koforidua, Otchere Baafi said Dr Bawumia displayed exceptional courage and loyalty at a time when, according to him, many senior party members were reluctant to step forward.
He recounted that during the Supreme Court proceedings, Dr Bawumia served as the party’s star witness and vigorously defended the NPP’s case “when all the men in the NPP ran away,” earning admiration across the party.
“Those who were there will remember. It was Dr Bawumia who stood in the dock, faced the tough questions, and defended the NPP with boldness and clarity. That is the type of leadership we need now,” Otchere Baafi emphasised.
He argued that Dr Bawumia’s performance during the petition marked a turning point in his political career and solidified his image as one of the party’s most reliable leaders.
According to him, the former Vice President has since remained steadfast in his commitment to the party, contributing to policy development and serving in various capacities.
Otchere Baafi urged delegates to reward this loyalty by endorsing Dr Bawumia in the upcoming 31 January 2026 presidential primary, insisting he is the most experienced and marketable candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.
“Someone who stood for us in our most difficult times will surely stand for us again when it matters most. Dr Bawumia is the backbone we can trust,” he added.
He also called for unity within the party, stressing that only a united front behind a credible candidate can return the NPP to power.
