Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as NAPO, has reassured Ghanaians that a future Bawumia-led government will not impose a ban on small-scale mining.
He emphasised that small-scale miners will be empowered to engage in responsible mining practices while expanding their operations under the next NPP administration.
Speaking at a campaign event in the Manso Adubia constituency in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, October 8, NAPO highlighted the party's stance on mining.
He assured the community members and party supporters that the government recognizes the importance of small-scale mining to the livelihoods of many Ghanaians and the national economy.
NAPO further explained the need to differentiate between responsible, regulated small-scale mining and the destructive activities associated with illegal mining, often referred to as "galamsey."
He stressed that the government's focus would be on supporting miners to operate within the law while safeguarding the environment.
As part of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign promises, NAPO indicated that measures will be put in place to promote responsible mining.
These measures will ensure that miners are educated on environmentally friendly practices and given the resources they need to comply with regulations.
The vice-presidential candidate also called on miners to collaborate with the government in its efforts to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana's natural resources.
He expressed confidence that with the right support, small-scale miners could thrive and contribute positively to the country's development.
“A government led by Dr Bawumia will promote mining. We cannot stop mining, but we will do so responsibly. We will not mine to destroy our water bodies and forests. We will make equipment that ensures responsible mining available to Ghanaians,” he said.
