Ghana indeed has a lot of great rising actresses, one of whom is actress Beverly Afaglo. However, for whatever parochial reasons, some big names behind the movie industry only use few faces for the bigger roles.
Even though most upcoming actresses find this demeaning, actress Beverly says she is not perturbed as she believes that one day she will get there without any ‘shortcut’ means.
In an exclusive interview with BEATWAVES, the actress, who is currently dating Eugene (Praye Honeho) of Praye fame, said she is not quitting her acting dream for whatever reason until she breathes her last breath, despite seeming discrimination in the industry.
“Acting is my passion and I will do it any time and any day. Maybe I will quit when producers go for a meeting and say they will not use me again. Till then, I will do movies till my last breath,” says the fun-loving 26-year-old actress who hails from the Volta Region.
However, the Advance Diploma holder in Beauty Therapy and ex-student of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) is disappointed with how pundits in the industry are not giving actresses a fair playing ground, as the disturbing issue of sex for roles and beauty has become the main urge for acting.
“Tell them that I said it is true producers sleep with some actresses before they give them roles.
That is the reason why some of us do one movie in a whole year and never get the chance again because we won’t give in to their amorous advances. I believe in prayers and I know some actresses sleep with people to become stars. As for me, I always tell God I won’t sleep with anybody but I will be there.
I am a very religious person and people doubt it when I say this, but I can count the number of times I prayed to God and challenged Him that I wanted to be part of this movie and by His grace, I got it.” Beverly almost always gets her scripts late because she will not give in to the sexual advances of some players in the industry, BEATWAVES has learnt.
Beverly entered showbiz through a friend called Nabel Alhassan who first groomed her through TV presentation. He wrote a TV concept titled Up-Close for her to present but that could not come out. He then introduced her to one Paa Kwesi at TV3 who further trained her to present on TV; a situation which gave her the chance to present Music, Music in 2005.
She later went to present Beauty & Style on Metro TV for two years. Then she had a call from Venus Films for her first role in the hit movie ‘The Return of Beyonce’; and that was her breakthrough.
Beverly went for a lot of auditions whilst presenting her TV programmes. Some of the movies she had so far appeared in are ‘Big Girls Club,’ ‘Total Exchange,’ ‘Crime to Christ,’ ‘Playboy,’ ‘Girls Connection,’ and the yet-to-be-released ‘The King’s Bride’.
