Bui Power Authority to spill water from dam

The Bui Power Authority has issued alert it will spill water from its dam as part of measures to make the dam more efficient.

The Director of Resources Estate and Environment at the Bui Power Authority told Joy News the authority will do the spilling on the 14th of this month as part of its regular tests.

He added the spill will not affect communities living along the dam because they have put in place all precautionary measures.

“We have been visiting all the communities that are close to the river basin and have been educating them on what we want to do,” Patrick Kwakye said.

The spilling comes at a time the country is battling power crisis for almost four years. There has been a shift in the energy mix from hydro to thermal with an attendant increase in cost of energy production.

An emergency power barge from turkey has been connected to the national grid early this month to ameliorate the power situation in the country.

But engineers are awaiting some mechanical works on the barge to allow final transmission.

This comes at a time when the ECG is shedding over 400 megawatts of power nationwide.

According to Mr Kwakye, the Bui Power Authority has increased its power generation to help address the power crisis in the country.

“We have one unit working, which is producing 100MW of power and in the evenings when we are operating on two units, we produce 200MW,” he said.

He added that a mini-hydro plant has been completed and it generates 4MW of power in 24hours.
