The President of the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has called on the government to build more warehouses to store maize.
According to, Michael Nyarko-Ampem, the move will help in stabilising the prices of the commodity.
Over the past few weeks, maize has seen a shortage leading to a hike in prices on the market.
A 50 kg bag that sold at Gh¢65.00 from 2017 to June 2020 moved to Gh¢100.00 in December 2020.
Subsequently, in July 2021, 50kg bag is sold between Gh¢140.00 and Gh¢162.00 according to the Techiman Maize Traders and Dealers Association Pricing Scale.
Poultry farmers are also lamenting the direct impact the situation has on the price of their birds’ feed.
Speaking to Nhyira Addo on Joy Prime’s Let’s Talk Business on Monday, he said, “we do not have enough warehouses to store maize in the bumper season. This affects the buffer stock”.
Mr Nyarko-Ampem disclosed that fresh maize cannot be used to feed the birds because of the high water content. This mounts pressure on the buffer stock.
“The Government should collaborate with ADB to provide Storage facilities,” he added.
