The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has responded to the recent announcement of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger exiting the community, reassuring the nations of their importance.
While ECOWAS acknowledges that it has not officially received any formal notification regarding the withdrawal of the three Member States, the organisation is steadfast in its commitment to seeking a negotiated solution to address the political challenges in these countries.
The decision of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to depart from ECOWAS was declared on Sunday, citing concerns that the community has deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.
In response, ECOWAS, through a communiqué, affirmed its dedication to working collaboratively with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to restore constitutional order, adhering to the directives from the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
ECOWAS underlined the ongoing significance of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali as essential members of the regional community, despite the current leadership in these countries being held by military authorities who took control from civilian leaders.
The organisation remains committed to finding a resolution to the political impasse and strengthening ties with these nations.
